From May 19 to 21, 2022, the research project’s first international interdisciplinary conference will take place in Hamburg. It will focus on the visual dimensions of contemporary poetry: How do poems relate to contemporary visual culture? What knowledge can poetry in the digital age generate about the relationship between images, texts, and language, as well as about changes in production and reception practices? What are its potentials for (post-)digital language and media criticism?
The conference papers, presented in English and German, will look at this topic from the perspective of literary, media, and film studies, visual culture and communication studies. They will address phenomena such as the aesthetics of script and images in poetry and poetry films; transformation and processuality in digital poetry; the lyric in the visual arts and the figurative in book poetry; poetic reading and writing practices in digital media; and poetry, protest, politics, and participatory culture. The poet Chris Kerr also presents his and Dan Holden’s code poetry in a lecture performance on Friday evening (20 May).
The conference has been conceptualized and organized by Dr. Wiebke Vorrath und Magdalena Korecka, M.A., from sub-project 3 “Poetry and Contemporary Visual Culture”.
It will take place at the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky (Vortragsraum) and the Universität Hamburg (ESA W 221).
