Die Politik der Poesie / The Politics of Poetry (Poetry Debates I)
Event series, fall 2021
Curated and hosted by Claudia Benthien
Under the title “Die Politik der Poesie / The Politics of Poetry,” four public evening events will delve into negotiations of recent cultural and societal topics that are being addressed in contemporary poetry. Scholars and poets will put their views and works up for discussion in talks, readings, and roundtable discussions. The events will be held in German and English. The series is being curated by Prof. Claudia Benthien, Principal Investigator of the project “Poetry in the Digital Age”.
The events will discuss topics such as the issues of public space that have been brought to the foreground by poetic interventions in the city; activism in social media poetry that negotiates socio-political topics like racism, gender, and mental health; “poetry in the Anthropocene,” questioning whether there is a future for our planet in the age of climate change; and poems by the opposition in Belarus, which are being disseminated through social media, directly addressing Europe and accusing it of non-intervention in the face of conflict. All four events will investigate the “politics of poetry”: how is the medium of poetic language questioning the current state of society and politics?
