Crafting Poetry with Digital Media

From the telephone and television to the internet and virtual reality, new media technologies have radically reshaped how humans communicate. In recent years, however, digital media and technologies have become ingrained in nearly every aspect of everyday life. The abundance of sonic and audiovisual content on online platforms has led media scholars to declare an era of “digital orality,” signaling a shift away from traditional written forms of communication. At the same time, however, an expanded technological literacy is emerging that is essential to successfully navigating media landscapes.
How are poets engaging with these shifts? How are digital media and technologies influencing how poetry is written, spoken and disseminated today? On the one hand, contemporary poetry demonstrates an affinity to the language of digital communication – the language of text messages and social media posts – aestheticizing and critically questioning it in equal measures. On the other hand, the very notion of the poem is expanding far beyond the book through a variety of multimedia and interactive formats. The opening event of this Poetry Debates series will thus explore how media competence is shaping the poet’s craft today. It will be held in German.
